Parvovirus Outbreak Warning

vaccinate dogWARNING OVER DEADLY DISEASE

After a series of reported parvo outbreaks across the UK, we are issuing urgent advice to dog owners.

Nicholas Smith, our Senior Vet here at PetCare of urges owners to ensure their animals have up-to-date vaccinations.  He would recommend contacting PetCare to check when the last vaccination was done and when the next one is due and, if necessary, restarting the vaccination course.

Canine parvovirus (CPV) is a highly infectious disease that can lead to death.  It mainly affects younger dogs and symptoms include vomiting, diarrhoea, mucus or blood in the faeces, tiredness and loss of appetite.  Some dogs can survive the infection but only following intensive veterinary and nursing care.

The virus is usually spread to unvaccinated dogs who share communal areas with infected dogs as it can easily be passed on through contact with faeces.  While the virus can kill a dog within days, it poses no danger to humans.

Nicholas says “Parvovirus is preventable through vaccination, so protecting dogs, particularly puppies, from disease and suffering should be a priority.  I strongly advise owners to check with their vet about vaccinating against this disease and ensure that correct booster vaccinations are given throughout the dog’s lifetime to ensure protection against this potentially fatal disease.”

He added, “I do not want to spread alarm, but it is essential that dog owners takes this threat seriously otherwise parvovirus has the potential to spread very easily through the local dog population”.

For further information or to book your dog in for vaccinations please telephone the surgery on 01903 782387.
